3 Axis Inc. was commissioned by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 2014. We were tasked to create a replica ceiling panel for a Jain Shrine, which was under restoration in their conservation lab. Utilizing a 3D laser scanner, we scanned portions of the shrine using the preexisting patterns as templates. The scanned data was reassembled, sculpted, and refined digitally to create a new pattern. The pattern was carved into a Medex panel using a small (.0625″ diameter) cutting bit by our CNC machine. These complicated hand carvings were quite a challenge but ultimately the panel turned out beautiful.
